About this tool
Every new shop, unit, branch or product line has two numbers that matter more than the rest: the monthly sales at which you stop losing money (break-even), and the month in which your total profit has paid back what you invested (payback). Banks ask for both in a project report, and you should know them before you sign the rent agreement.
This planner works the way a CA would do it on paper: fixed costs stay the same whatever you sell, variable costs move with sales, and whatever is left (the contribution) first pays the fixed costs and then pays back your investment.

Questions
What is a good payback period for an MSME?
For a shop or service business, under 24 months is healthy. For a manufacturing unit with machinery, 3 to 5 years is common. If payback is longer than the loan tenure, the EMI will come out of your own pocket.
What counts as a fixed cost?
Costs you pay even if you sell nothing that month: rent, salaries, EMI interest, electricity minimum charges, internet, accountant fees.
Why does my payback change when sales grow?
Because each extra rupee of sales brings in its contribution margin. Growth of even 5% a month can bring payback forward by several months.
